English)

Teaching Left-behind Children in TeaTown

Time: 07/02/2016 - 07/16/2016

Teacher: Yifang 787-342-8568

Quota: 20

This is the first time Chinaway volunteers will be teaching English in the tea town Pujiang, Sichuan, China. Sichuan is the one of the largest tea producers among the Chinese provinces and Pujiang is a town where many organic agricultural field experiments occur.

85% of the population in Pujian is composed of peasants. The Chinese government has wished to relieve the poverty in the area by encouraging the planting of tea. It is said that in this way residents will be able to live in a peaceful and satisfying manner. However, although the peasants have produced large amounts of tea, they have not been able to earn much profit from it. Because of this, many parents have to go out of town to work and earn money for their families.

During the summer, their children stay in Pujiang. They have no opportunities to travel, attend summer camps, or in short, understand the outside world. The Chinaway volunteer program will provide care for these children and open a window for them to learn about the world outside Pujiang.

Going to Pujiang will also allow American high schoolers to learn about the ways tea is planted and produced. Tea is an extraordinary beverage with multiple health benefits and China is one of the largest producers of it. By working in a tea field, student volunteers will be able to reflect upon how they can promote the drinking of tea instead of that of harmful drinks such as Coca-Cola and other types of soda.
