2014 Chinaway Summer Program Information

Chinaway Summer Program offers American students the chance to volunteer and intern in Mainland China. Through volunteering with Chinaway, students will be able to gain real world epistemology and learn in a hands-on experience. Helping people in China also may help students develop themselves and think more globally. Because of its excellent facilities, brilliant mentors, and fun learning environment, this is a perfect summer opportunity.

Chinaway Summer Program, sticking to its motto of “improve yourself and serve the world; care for others and perfect yourself,” will launch three projects in 2014, and invite students to participate in those that best interest and suit them. (Past project descriptions can be found at www.chinawayusa.com and http://blog.sina.com.cn/sfvolunteer )

                                    PROJECTS

1) Summer Computer Software Internship (June 18 – July 2)
As an intern, you will learn and help China at the same time! You’ll learn the ins-and-outs of software and animation, be involved in hands-on software development, and help improve Chinese websites. Volunteers will:
•    Learn the basics of computer software
•    Learn the basics of computer animation
•    Complete your own animation projects
•    Learn how to build dynamic and engaging websites
•    Be part of a team to improve the official website of Chengdu
•    Visit cultural and social institutions (Panda centers, cultural monuments, schools)
•    Volunteer at charitable organizations and help the less-privileged children of China

The world is always changing; being able to anticipate where the world will go is one of the fundamental tasks of education. Mobile devices, networks, computers, and software are changing our lives. As technology continues to impact every aspect of society, staying on the cutting edge is of paramount importance. Animation is increasingly becoming an important cultural and entertainment medium, and learning how to turn an idea into a picture into an animation will be a valuable asset in the future. Being a 2014 summer software intern gives you access to the software, knowledge, and culture of this important field.

China is wielding greater and greater influence in the world and gaining visibility in markets previously dominated by other countries. As a result, those who can adeptly use both Chinese and American software possess a coveted and in-demand skill. Thus, American teenagers who can comfortably operate within the Chinese software culture will open doors and be of great value in the future.

This project is jointly organized by the Sichuan Provincial Association of Science, Sichuan Animation Center, Sichuan Universities, and the Chengdu Joint Youth Technology Conference. Upon completion, students will receive a certificate of completion from each of these bodies. The American organizers will also provide each student with a certificate of community service.

2) English Teaching Volunteer Project (June 18 – July 2,     Quota 30 )
We are continuing our project to support the education of underprivileged children in Chengdu, and children in the surrounding countryside to give them the knowledge and skills to better serve their community and succeed in their lives. Volunteers will:
•    Introduce American culture to children who live in the countryside
•    Teach English classes to the children
•    Gain an appreciation and understanding of the Chinese countryside
•    Visit local cultural attractions: Panda center, Expo, etc.
•    Lead activities for underprivileged and autistic children at the Autism Center

Huge numbers of rural and poor urban Chinese children have a very limited understanding of the world. Giving each child better knowledge, training, and experience would go a long way to build a better tomorrow; for this reason, teaching English has far greater ramifications than just knowledge of the language. In the meantime, these interactions and communication will also help you grow as a person. Maybe you will discover new interests and hobbies.

China is developing a growing influence in the world. This provides many opportunities for those versed in both English and Chinese to bridge gaps between China and the rest of the world. While China needs advanced knowledge and skills, the world needs the vast market and customers. This project addresses both needs, allowing you to simultaneously understand and become familiar with China and improve it.

This project is jointly organized by the Communist Youth League of Sichuan Province, the Chengdu Translators Association, and many schools in Dujiangyan. Upon completion, students will receive a certificate of completion from each of these bodies. The American organizers will also provide each student with a certificate of community service.

3) Volunteer project to help children left behind (July 5 – August 22. Split into two–week sessions. Accept group/organization apply)
As a volunteer, you care for left-behind children in the city and provide them with cultural and educational activities, teach English, and entertain them with songs, paintings, etc. Volunteers will:
•    Work with left-behind children in child care centers
•    Improve children’s cultural awareness through songs and games
•    Visit cultural attractions with the children
•    Live with local families and experience Chinese life
•    Visit local attractions

Everyone wants to be happy, but not everyone is given that chance. A social phenomenon in China is the existence of the left-behind children. A result of rapid urbanization, they are children whose parents have to leave the hometown to work in far-away places, therefore are not close by to care for and guide them. You help fill a void, and teach them how to empathize by caring for them, and in the process fill their world with more joy. By doing so, you can also find the tools to add more happiness to your own life.

This project is jointly organized by the Communist Youth League of Sichuan Province, the Chengdu Left-behind Children Center, and Sichuan Volunteer Center, and among other institutions. Upon completion, students will receive a certificate of completion from each of these bodies. The American organizers will provide each student with a certificate of community service.
